"Fear is a beast that feeds on attention"
I came across that phrase in a book of metaphors I read a while ago and I’ve only just come to understand it. On what is perhaps the most bewildering experience of my life, I have for the most part chosen to remain silent. The result of silence has led me to the conclusion that suppressed cogitation tends to gestate. I have also learnt that the emotional band aid, the phrase ‘I am okay’ that we use to cover up our pain just slows down the healing process. Being silent when you are bleeding on the inside and bursting with pain is one of the hardest things to do yet thousands do it every day of their lives. The loss of a loved one or heartbreak from a broken relationship exposes us to feelings and thoughts we didn’t think we were capable of. It’s hard to deal with yet you have to get back to your job or your family or whatever. You have to lock all those feelings away and ‘be normal’. Some people are blessed to have friends and family that read your eyes not your smile so they ask questions, but here’s the thing; to describe pain is as difficult as it is frustrating so you just give an even bigger smile and say ‘I am okay’. However the more you pretend, you keep picking at the wounds just to keep the Band-Aid on a bit longer. Deep down you are scared of moving on. You are scared of starting all over again and more importantly you are scared of failing.
How do you start the process of healing?
How do you get back to a place where you are happy physically and emotionally?
